The piece in short

Origin Iran, format 60 × 90 cm — a Tabriz made entirely by hand. The covered area is about 0.54 m² (2' × 3'). Tabriz is one of the oldest and most important weaving centres in Persia.

Materials and construction

Stated material: cotton warp, new wool, silk. Construction method: hand-knotted. Pile height is given as 7-10mm.

Format and use

The rug is rectangular. Small enough to sit in front of a dresser or just inside a door.

Knot density and quality

The stated knot density is 500,000–599,999 knots/m². Very fine knotting of this kind takes many times the working hours and shows correspondingly precise pattern work.

On the colourway

The stated colourway is Weiß / beige. Silk takes light differently from wool, so the same area can look pale from one side and deep from the other.
