The piece in short

Origin Iran, format 151 × 200 cm — a Tabriz made entirely by hand. It covers approximately 3.02 m², or 5' × 6.6'. Tabriz is one of the oldest and most important weaving centres in Persia.

Construction

Stated material: new wool, silk, silk warp. The rug was hand-knotted throughout. Pile height is given as 7-10mm.

Size and placement

The rug is rectangular. At this size it anchors a living room as the central surface.

Knot density and quality

The stated knot density is 1,000,000+ knots/m². Very fine knotting of this kind takes many times the working hours and shows correspondingly precise pattern work.

On the colourway

Colour is recorded as red and orange. Silk takes light differently from wool, so the same area can look pale from one side and deep from the other.
