The piece in short

Origin Iran, format 178 × 114 cm — a Nain made entirely by hand. That is roughly 2.03 m² of floor, about 5.8' × 3.7'. Nain rugs are traditionally finely knotted, with pale ivory and blue palettes.

Materials and construction

Stated material: cotton warp, new wool, silk. The rug was hand-knotted throughout. Pile height is given as approx. 6 mm. Weight is given as ap. 5 kg.

Where it fits

The rug is rectangular. A format for a smaller room, or the area directly in front of a sofa.

On the knot count

The stated knot density is 600,000–699,999 knots/m². Very fine knotting of this kind takes many times the working hours and shows correspondingly precise pattern work.

On the colourway

Colour is recorded as green / Oliv. Silk takes light differently from wool, so the same area can look pale from one side and deep from the other.
