Description

Overview

A Tabriz from Iran, measuring 254 × 347 cm. That is roughly 8.81 m² of floor, about 8.3' × 11.4'. Tabriz is one of the oldest and most important weaving centres in Persia.

Materials and construction

Stated material: cotton warp, new wool, silk. The rug was hand-knotted throughout. Pile height is given as 7-10mm.

Where it fits

A large format for open-plan rooms or formal reception spaces.

On the knot count

The stated knot density is 500,000–599,999 knots/m². Very fine knotting of this kind takes many times the working hours and shows correspondingly precise pattern work.

How it reads

Colour is recorded as red and orange. Silk takes light differently from wool, so the same area can look pale from one side and deep from the other.
