The piece in short

Origin Iran, format 210 × 297 cm — a Tabriz made entirely by hand. That is roughly 6.24 m² of floor, about 6.9' × 9.7'. Tabriz is one of the oldest and most important weaving centres in Persia.

Materials and construction

Stated material: cotton warp, new wool, silk. The rug was hand-knotted throughout. Pile height is given as 5-7mm.

Format and use

At this size it anchors a living room as the central surface.

On the knot count

The stated knot density is 600,000–699,999 knots/m². Very fine knotting of this kind takes many times the working hours and shows correspondingly precise pattern work.

On the colourway

The stated colourway is red and orange. Silk takes light differently from wool, so the same area can look pale from one side and deep from the other.
