Description

Overview

A Tabriz Persian rug from Iran, measuring 103 × 103 cm. It covers approximately 1.06 m², or 3.4′ × 3.4′. Tabriz in north-western Iran is one of the oldest and most important weaving centres in Persia.

Materials and construction

Stated material: cotton warp, wool, silk. The rug was knotted entirely by hand on the loom, which is why the surface is not mechanically even but carries the small irregularities that mark hand work. Silk is set into a wool ground, so the silk passages catch the light while the wool carries the wear. The cotton warp holds the rug flat and keeps it dimensionally stable.

Format and use

The rug is round or oval. At this size the rug works as an accent — beside a bed, under a low table, or on a wall. In our size filter it is listed under Smaller than 200×135cm.

Fineness of the knotting

The stated knot density is 500,000–599,999 knots/m². This is a fine count. Curved lines stay smooth and small motifs remain legible at arm’s length.

Age and condition

Stated age: contemporary. The pile is still full and largely unwalked. The dominant colour range is red and orange. The piece is a one-off: in this combination of size, material, knot count and drawing it exists exactly once, and it cannot be reordered once sold.
