Description

Overview

A Qom Persian rug from Iran, measuring 246 × 325 cm. It covers approximately 8.00 m², or 8.1′ × 10.7′. Qom in central Iran has produced fine silk rugs since the early twentieth century; its workshops are known for high knot counts and for floral and medallion designs.

Materials and construction

Stated material: cotton warp, wool, silk. The rug was knotted entirely by hand on the loom, which is why the surface is not mechanically even but carries the small irregularities that mark hand work. Silk is set into a wool ground, so the silk passages catch the light while the wool carries the wear. The cotton warp holds the rug flat and keeps it dimensionally stable.

Format and use

The rug is rectangular. This is the classic living-room size: a seating group can stand on it with the border still visible. In our size filter it is listed under approx. 350×250cm.

Fineness of the knotting

The stated knot density is 400,000–499,999 knots/m². A middle count: the pattern reads clearly while the rug keeps a robust, everyday handle.

Age and condition

Stated age: contemporary. The pile is still full and largely unwalked. The piece is a one-off: in this combination of size, material, knot count and drawing it exists exactly once, and it cannot be reordered once sold.
