The piece in short

A Nain from Iran, measuring 108 × 153 cm. The covered area is about 1.65 m² (3.5' × 5'). Nain rugs are traditionally finely knotted, with pale ivory and blue palettes.

Construction

Stated material: cotton warp, new wool. The rug was hand-knotted throughout. Pile height is given as 10-12mm.

Format and use

The rug is rectangular. A format for a smaller room, or the area directly in front of a sofa.

Fineness of the knotting

The stated knot density is 500,000–599,999 knots/m². Very fine knotting of this kind takes many times the working hours and shows correspondingly precise pattern work.

On the colourway

It is catalogued under red and orange. With traditionally dyed wool, small variations of tone within one field are normal.
