The piece in short

Origin Iran, format 82 × 126 cm — a Tabriz made entirely by hand. The covered area is about 1.03 m² (2.7' × 4.1'). Tabriz is one of the oldest and most important weaving centres in Persia.

Construction

Stated material: cotton warp, new wool, silk. The rug was hand-knotted throughout. Pile height is given as 7-10mm.

Size and placement

The rug is rectangular. A small format, at home in a hallway, beside a bed, or in front of a bench.

Fineness of the knotting

The stated knot density is 500,000–599,999 knots/m². Very fine knotting of this kind takes many times the working hours and shows correspondingly precise pattern work.

On the colourway

The stated colourway is multicolour. Silk takes light differently from wool, so the same area can look pale from one side and deep from the other.
