Description

Overview

A Tabriz from Iran, measuring 300 × 204 cm. The covered area is about 6.12 m² (9.8' × 6.7'). Tabriz is one of the oldest and most important weaving centres in Persia.

Construction

Stated material: cotton warp, new wool. The rug was hand-knotted throughout. Pile height is given as approx. 8 mm. Weight is given as ap. 18 kg.

Size and placement

The rug is rectangular. Large enough to hold a full seating group.

Fineness of the knotting

The stated knot density is 400,000–499,999 knots/m². At this density even small-scale motifs can be worked out cleanly.

On the colourway

The stated colourway is multicolour. Handmade rugs always show slight colour shifts from knot to knot — that is a mark of hand work, not a defect.

Period

Stated age: contemporary, 0–20 years old. As a contemporary piece the pile is still even and largely unwalked.
