Description

Overview

A Kashmir Oriental rug from India, measuring 214 × 312 cm. It covers approximately 6.68 m², or 7.0′ × 10.2′. Kashmir rugs are knotted in northern India in the Persian tradition, usually in silk or a silk-like fibre, with densely drawn floral fields.

Materials and construction

Stated material: wool, silk warp. The rug was knotted entirely by hand on the loom, which is why the surface is not mechanically even but carries the small irregularities that mark hand work. New wool gives a resilient pile that recovers from footfall and takes dye deeply. The silk warp forms the carrying structure and sets how finely the rug can be knotted.

Format and use

The rug is rectangular. This is the classic living-room size: a seating group can stand on it with the border still visible. In our size filter it is listed under approx. 300×200cm.

Fineness of the knotting

The stated knot density is 500,000–599,999 knots/m². This is a fine count. Curved lines stay smooth and small motifs remain legible at arm’s length.

Age and condition

Stated age: contemporary. The pile is still full and largely unwalked. The piece is a one-off: in this combination of size, material, knot count and drawing it exists exactly once, and it cannot be reordered once sold.
