The piece in short

Origin Iran, format 384 × 200 cm — a Malayer made entirely by hand. The covered area is about 7.68 m² (12.6' × 6.6').

Materials and construction

Stated material: cotton warp, new wool. The rug was hand-knotted throughout. Pile height is given as approx. 6 mm. Weight is given as approx. 18 kg.

Format and use

The rug is rectangular. A format for large rooms, with space for an entire seating arrangement.

Fineness of the knotting

The stated knot density is 300,000–399,999 knots/m². At this density even small-scale motifs can be worked out cleanly.

How it reads

Colour is recorded as multicolour. With traditionally dyed wool, small variations of tone within one field are normal.

Period

Stated age: antique. In a rug of this age, patina and some pile loss belong to the picture.
